All Temps (Mercurial Reading)

Graeme Wahn

About the Artwork

A thermometer, carefully edited so that its needle sits at every temperature from below freezing to over 50° C, forms the captivating focus of Graeme Wahn’s new work All Temps (Mercurial Reading). Its radiating dial mirrors the image of the sun at its centre, while also referencing the exact conditions during which this image was made: the “heat dome” event of summer 2021, when outside temperatures broke 48° in BC’s Interior where the artist lives. Precisely composed yet subtly altered, the photograph is a deep meditation on both an historic moment as well as our lived present. All Temps (Mercurial Reading) was presented recently in the group exhibition Toil, and a Peaceful Life at Pumice Raft in Toronto.
