Rydel Cerezo
Andreas In Lombardy
About the Artwork
There is something art historical about the cool, over-the-shoulder gaze in Rydel Cerezo’s Andreas in Lombardy. The photograph reads almost like a painting save for the intriguing, out-of-focus figure in the foreground who seems to dodge the camera, revealing the subject’s stare. Captured during a trip to Europe with his then-partner’s family, Cerezo places the viewer in his own position: simultaneously an insider and outsider. The resulting image is quietly cinematic, drawing ample influence from French New Wave film and directors such as Éric Rohmer. Andreas in Lombardy helped to instigate Cerezo’s ongoing series of poetic, autographical works on belonging, desire, and loss, recently presented in the solo exhibition Home Sweet Home at The Polygon Gallery.
